Finding the Right Category for Learnzy
Problem Statement
After months of research and engineering, Learnzy had become much more than an exam preparation app.
It combined academic planning, AI assistance, mistake tracking, revision systems, physiological readiness research and mental wellness into a single product.
Ironically, the more capable the product became, the harder it became to explain.
The engineering problem had largely been solved.
The communication problem had not.
This investigation began with a simple question.
How do you explain a product that doesn’t fit into an existing category?
Initial Positioning
Like many early products, Learnzy’s first positioning focused on outcomes.
Learnzy
Less Mistakes.
More Marks.
The statement was simple.
Students immediately understood the promise.
However, it introduced an unexpected problem.
It described the result.
It did not explain the product.
Questions naturally followed.
- Is it a question bank?
- Is it test analysis?
- Is it coaching?
- Is it an AI tutor?
The positioning communicated the destination.
Not the vehicle.
Second Iteration
As AI became increasingly integrated into the product, another positioning emerged.
Learnzy
Your Second Brain.
Internally, this felt closer to what we were building.
Learnzy remembered.
Learnzy organized.
Learnzy suggested.
Learnzy understood context.
However, when discussed with students, another issue appeared.
The phrase “Second Brain” already carried existing meanings.
- Knowledge management.
- Note-taking.
- Personal productivity.
For an entrance examination student preparing for NEET, the phrase created curiosity—but not clarity.
The category already existed in people’s minds.
Learnzy wasn’t trying to compete in that category.
The Realization
After several iterations, one observation became increasingly clear.
Every positioning attempt was describing a feature.
Not the underlying problem.
The question gradually changed.
Instead of asking:
How should we describe Learnzy?
We began asking:
What category are we actually trying to create?
That question fundamentally changed the investigation.
Looking Beyond Features
Instead of listing functionality, we stepped back and examined what every major feature was trying to accomplish.

Although the implementation differed, every system ultimately attempted to improve a student’s ability to consistently perform under examination conditions.
Performance—not content—became the common thread.
Creating a Category
Once that realization became clear, the positioning process simplified considerably.
Instead of describing individual features, the product could simply describe the category it belonged to.

Rather than saying:
- AI-powered planner
- AI study companion
- Second Brain
Learnzy became:
Learnzy
The Performance System for Students.
Why “Performance System”
The word System was intentionally chosen.
Learnzy was never intended to be a single feature.
It was designed as an integrated collection of research, engineering and product decisions.
A system could naturally include:
- academic planning
- AI guidance
- mistake tracking
- physiological readiness
- mental wellness
- future interventions
without requiring the positioning itself to change.
This created an expandable foundation rather than a feature-specific slogan.
Positioning Architecture
The positioning process eventually became a simple hierarchy.

Every future feature should strengthen the category rather than redefine it.

Features become implementation.
Performance System remains the identity.
Design Principles
Position the problem, not the implementation.
People rarely care how a system works before they understand why it exists.
Categories outlive features.
Features change.
Categories remain stable.
A good category should still describe the product five years later.
Simplicity requires removing information.
Every iteration removed words rather than adding them.
The goal was not maximum explanation.
The goal was immediate understanding.
Every feature should reinforce the same story.
If a new feature cannot naturally fit inside the existing positioning, either the feature or the positioning should be reconsidered.

Implications
This investigation changed more than the homepage.
It changed product decisions.
New features were no longer evaluated by asking:
Will students use this?
Instead, they were evaluated by asking:
Does this strengthen the idea of a Performance System?
That single question became a filter for future engineering, research and product decisions.
Looking Forward
Positioning is not static.
The goal is not to find a slogan that works today.
The goal is to create a category that, over time, becomes synonymous with the product itself.
The long-term aspiration is that “Performance System” becomes as naturally associated with Learnzy as “search” became associated with Google or “design collaboration” became associated with Figma.
Whether that happens remains to be seen.
But that became the direction that guided every subsequent product decision.
